With its tuft of spiky, dusty green leaves and cross-hatched, golden orange skin, the pineapple has an unmistakable appearance. Grown in the tropics, their juicy yellow flesh is sweet with an acidic tang and very fragrant. They are available all year round.The indigenous people of southern Brazil and Paraguay spread the pineapple throughout south America and it eventually reached the Caribbean. Columbus discovered it in the Indies and brought it back with him to Europe.A ripe pineapple should smell sweetly and strongly of pineapple. It will also feel heavy for its size. An additional test for ripeness is to pluck out one of the leaves - it should come away easily.


Consumers of pineapple have claimed that pineapple has benefits for some intestinal disorders; others claim that it helps to induce childbirth when a baby is overdue. Pineapple is an excellent source of manganese, as well as containing high levels of Vitamin C and Vitamin B1.


At room temperature - a ripe one will keep for around 3 days. Whole pineapples shouldn't be stored in the fridge - but once the flesh has been peeled and chopped it's fine to chill it, stored in an airtight container.


Most of the veg is sourced as locally as possible, due to seasonal restrictions and availability and from South West Markets and producers.
