Onions are cultivated in the UK all the year round. The primary growing period is during the months of July to October.Traces of onions have been found in Bronze Age settlements, so we've been using them for millennia. During the Middle Ages, they were heavily used, even in peasant cooking, because of their strong flavour. Did you know the Ancient Egyptians used to worship onions - believing that the rings represented eternal life. Red onions are less common than white onions and many argue they have a more delicate flavour. They are delicious raw, in salads, and can be substituted for white onions in most recipes.

Nutrition:

Healthwise, they have long been heralded as useful in the fight against coughs and colds... “An onion a day keeps a cold away!” They contain anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol and even anti-cancer ingredients. Onions are also a good source of fibre.

Storage:

Keep dried onions in a cool dark place, but not the fridge. They keep best if they have air circulating around them - hence the traditional method of hanging them in plaits to dry in barns - and can keep for months.

Source:

Local North Devon producers. We may also source from other South-West markets in times of high demand.
