From the cucurbit family, watermelons are herbaceous annual plants with a prostrate or climbing nature and with a very spread root system. Leaves are deeply lobed, flowers are yellow lonely and they attract insects with their bright colour, smell and nectar.Watermelon fruit has red flesh, consistent, sweet and very juicy, which is not surprising if considering 92% of watermelons is water.Fruit should be deep green, not dull and skin should be relatively smooth, it must have a distinctive creamy-yellow area, where the watermelon rested on the ground during its maturation process.

Nutrition:

Watermelon contains the highest level of Licopen than any other fruit, this is the responsible compound for the red colour of the pulp. This carotenoid is a powerful antioxidant, and combined with a healthy and balanced diet it helps to prevent many diseases.

Storage:

Keep unripe melons at room temperature to ripen, which may take up to 1 week and then can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week.
